Snacks are a regular part of your child’s day, but did you know the types of snacks your child is consuming can significantly impact their oral health? Here’s how to make teeth-friendly choices when it comes to snacking to ensure your child’s mouth stays healthy and cavity-free.
Have a Designated Snack Time
Prolonged exposure to sugars and carbohydrates on teeth increases the risk of cavities. Constantly snacking on crackers or other foods throughout the day leads to more sugar exposure on teeth. This prolonged exposure may lead to more cavities compared to children with structured snack times. Encourage your child to eat their snack in one sitting, then wait a few hours before consuming anything except water. This structured approach helps minimize the time sugary residues linger on teeth.
Choosing the Right Snacks
The type of snacks you choose for your child can affect their oral health. Opt for snacks that won’t stick to your child’s teeth and contain minimal sugar. Here are some examples of snacks to consider:
- Fresh Fruits:
Fruits like grapes and apple slices are excellent choices. They rinse away easily with a bit of water, minimizing the chances of sugar sticking to teeth. - Yogurt:
Despite containing sugar, yogurt is a good snack choice as it doesn’t adhere to teeth and washes off quickly. - Cheese:
Cheese is a tooth-friendly snack that helps stimulate saliva production, washing away food particles and protecting tooth enamel. - Nuts or Nut Butter:
Provided there are no allergies, nuts and nut butter keep your child full and rinse away quickly with a few sips of water. - Dark Chocolate:
If your child desires something sweet, consider dark chocolate with a higher cocoa content (around 72%). Dark chocolate contains less sugar and doesn’t stick to teeth as much as milk chocolate or candies.
