Sedation Dentistry with Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs)

In some cases, Virginia Family Dentistry’s Dentists will work with Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists to administer IV sedation to patients.

A CRNA is an advanced practice registered nurse who administers anesthesia and other medications. They also take care of and monitor people who receive or are recovering from anesthesia. CRNAs have specialized training and knowledge to administer anesthesia safely and properly. CRNAs work closely with Dentists to administer sedation during procedures.

Please note that CRNAs are outside contractors and are not employees of Virginia Family Dentistry. Therefore, if your procedure in our office requires the use of a CRNA, you will be billed separately by the provider for CRNA services.

Kimberley Van Alstine, CRNA, DNAP | Riser Anesthesia

While not employed by the practice, I have been working in Virginia Family Dentistry offices since 2016.  As sedation for dental procedures and surgery has become more prevalent and desired, I have increased my time spent at several different locations.  If you are interested in sedation or requesting information about options, your provider may give you a packet of information about the services I provide.

As a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, I administer anesthesia and provide related care before, during and after surgical, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.  I am concerned about patient safety and comfort, and I strive to ensure you have the best possible experience with Virginia Family Dentistry.

I graduated from Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing in 2000.  I enjoyed the next decade working in the intensive care units at Johns Hopkins Hospital. After moving to the Richmond area, I started a combined Masters and Doctorate program at VCU, graduating in 2012.  Since earning my advanced practice degrees, I have been at several area hospitals and offices practicing as a CRNA.  In addition, I am a proud member of the Navy Reserves Nurse Corps, deploying twice already in service to our country.

When you fill out the paperwork provided to you, the office transfers it to me, and I typically call you the night before your procedure to answer questions and provide reminders.  If you would like to speak with me prior to that, or you have questions, please feel free to contact me directly.

I am not affiliated with any insurance companies, but I do provide you with a detailed invoice that should contain the information you would need to file a claim with your insurance (medical or dental) if you choose to do so.  If your insurance company states you need additional information, I am always happy to help obtain what you need.

I truly love being a nurse and I trust the dentists and specialists I work with at VFD.  I feel we have a shared treatment plan that is patient focused and dedicated to your best outcome.  It is my pleasure to take the best care of you!hetists, including President and Government Relations Chair, among others. She is also the co-chair of the AANA Dental Advisory Panel.
