What are sealants?
Dental sealants are a thin protective coating that adheres to the surface of back teeth. Sealants keep cavities from forming and can stop decay in the early phases.
How do dental sealants work?
The chewing surfaces of molars have grooves, making the, vulnerable to decay. These grooves can be difficult to clean with brushing and flossing alone. The dental sealants provide protection by covering the affected area and creating a smooth outer surface of the tooth.
How are sealants placed?
The entire surface of the tooth is cleaned, rinsed, and dried. The dentist will then place an acidic gel on the tooth to roughen the surface and allow the sealant to form a strong bond with the tooth. The gel will be rinsed off and dried again. Then the liquid sealant will be applied to the grooves of the tooth and hardened. The hardened sealant becomes a smooth coating, protecting the tooth from decay.
Who can get dental sealants?
Although sealants are more commonly used to treat children, sealants can also be used to treat adult patients with deep grooves on the chewing surfaces of teeth.
What do sealants look like?
Sealants can be clear or white depending on the type applied to the tooth.
How long do sealants last?
Sealants can last for a few years before they need to be reapplied. It is important to keep up with regular dental visits so the dentist can check the condition of the sealant and reapply as necessary.
