Botox for Jaw Pain (TMD)

What Is Botox and How Can It Help Jaw Pain?

Botulinum toxin (Botox®) is an injectable medication that works by temporarily reducing the strength of targeted muscles. In dentistry, Botox can be used to help treat temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) by relaxing the muscles involved in clenching and grinding.

Depending on your symptoms, multiple muscles may need to be treated to achieve the best relief. In addition to TMD treatment, Botox may also be used to help manage certain headaches, migraines, and facial wrinkles.

Certain Virginia Family Dentistry Dentists can administer Botox to help treat TMD.

Am I a Candidate for Botox?

To determine whether you are a candidate and to create a personalized treatment plan, please schedule a consultation at one of our participating locations. At that time, the doctor will determine the appropriate dosage and the targeted muscle(s), which vary from patient to patient. For the best outcomes, we take into consideration that you:

  • Are in good overall health
  • Have no active infections in the treatment areas
  • Are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have no significant neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s Disease, ALS, Myasthenia Gravis, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), or Lambert-Eaton Syndrome.

How Botox Works

Botox can be used on its own or alongside other treatments, including physical therapy and/or oral appliances, to reduce inflammation, relieve pressure on the jaw joints, and reduce chronic muscle fatigue.

Once administered, effects begin to take effect gradually within 2-14 days, reach peak efficacy around 1 month, and then slowly fade over several months.

Regular maintenance treatments every 3-4 months are recommended to provide continued relief. With consistent treatment, some patients can extend the effects beyond 12 weeks between visits as muscles weaken over time.

What to Expect

  • Botox is priced per unit.
  • Botox is injected directly into the muscle and typically begins working within 2–14 days.
  • Results are usually most effective around 1 month after treatment.
  • Effects gradually fade over 1–3 months, though timing varies by patient.
  • Dosage is customized based on each patient’s needs.
  • Maintenance treatments every 3–4 months are recommended for best results.
  • With consistent treatment, some patients may be able to extend the time between visits.
  • If you have an upcoming special event, schedule treatment 2–4 weeks in advance to allow time for any potential bruising to resolve.

How to Prepare for Your Botox Appointment

To reduce the risk of bruising:

  • Avoid anti-inflammatory or blood-thinning medications (when medically appropriate) for about 2 weeks prior and a few days after treatment. Examples include: aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil®, Motrin®), naproxen (Aleve®), NSAIDs, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, and St. John’s Wort. Always consult your physician before stopping any prescribed medications.
  • Avoid alcoholic and caffeinated beverages for at least 24 hours prior to treatment.

After Your Botox Treatment

You may experience mild, temporary side effects like redness, swelling, or bruising at injection sites. This will often subside within hours to days. For best results:

  • Avoid touching treated areas for at least 4 hours.
  • Avoid massages and facials for a few days
  • Avoid hats, visors, and tight headbands if injections are placed in the head or facial muscles.
  • Avoid exercise, sun exposure, and heat for at least 4 hours.
